Science Corner

Publications, diagnostics and literature on Maxillo-mandibular Osteoimmunology — compiled for professional colleagues and for patients seeking a well-founded assessment.

Tab: Fundamentals

The starting point

Silent inflammation in the jawbone and its systemic effects

The work centres on fatty degenerative osteonecrosis of the jawbone (FDOK / “NICO”) and its association with chronic overexpression of the chemokine RANTES/CCL5.

In addition to RANTES/CCL5, the cytokines IL-1ra and MCP-1/CCL2 are routinely evaluated. Their expression pattern allows conclusions to be drawn about the immunological activity of a section of the jaw.

The ICOSIM information is based on scientifically recognised publications.

Publications

Practice-based and user studies by clinical condition

For the education and professional information of patients whose clinical condition is associated with Maxillo-mandibular Osteoimmunology, publications on the surgical remediation of fatty degenerative osteonecrosis of the jawbone (FDOK / “NICO”) with chronic overexpression of RANTES/CCL5 are compiled here.

Topic group 01

Gynaecological degenerative diseases

Publications on the association between silent inflammation in the jawbone and gynaecological degenerative conditions, including breast cancer.

Topic group 02

Facial pain and trigeminal neuralgia

Diagnostics and surgical remediation in persistent facial pain and in neuralgiform symptoms within the area supplied by the trigeminal nerve.

Topic group 03

Neurodegenerative diseases

Silent chronic inflammation in the jawbone and neurodegenerative diseases — with a focus on chronic fatigue syndrome and multiple sclerosis.

Topic group 04

Root-filled teeth and protein degradation products

Root-filled teeth, the biochemistry of potentially arising protein degradation products (“dental toxins”) and a possible link to chronic diseases.

Diagnostics

CaviTAU® — transalveolar ultrasound sonography

Conventional X-ray procedures show bone marrow defects in the jaw only to a limited extent. Transalveolar ultrasound sonography is radiation-free and reveals inflammatory foci in the jawbone, which are defined by the overexpression of RANTES/CCL5.

Radiation-free

Transalveolar ultrasound sonography works without ionising radiation.

TAU unit of measurement

Bone density measurement is quantified in the TAU unit of measurement and can thus be documented.

ALARA principle

First OPG, then ultrasound assessment — a CBCT only in the event of a positive ultrasound finding (ALARA principle of the German Radiation Protection Act).

Definition of foci

Inflammatory foci are defined primarily by an overexpression of the inflammatory messenger RANTES/CCL5.
