About ICOSIM

The International College of Maxillo-mandibular Osteoimmunology is a community of interest of practitioners that researches the interplay between the jawbone, bone marrow and the immune system — on a sound scientific basis and without commercial aims.

Who we are

A professional society for a young field of research

ICOSIM — International College of Maxillo-mandibular Osteoimmunology — was founded in Munich on 21 January 2015 and is entered as a registered association in the Munich Register of Associations.

The association is a community of interest of practitioners and pursues no commercial aims. ICOSIM does not compete with existing societies but cooperates with medical and dental organisations that have comparable systemic-integrative objectives — among them DEGUZ, GZM, IAOMT and ZAEN.

Its main focus is the research and further development of a holistic-integrative treatment approach developed by Dr. Lechner, Prof. J. Bouquot and many others.

Dr. Dr. PhD (UCN) med. dent. Johann Lechner, Chairman of the Board of ICOSIM e.V.

aims of the association

Scientific position

Four key tenets of Maxillo-mandibular Osteoimmunology

The work of the association is based on four fundamental scientific assumptions, which are continually reviewed in publications and application studies.

01

Bone marrow defects are immunologically active

Bone marrow defects, which have so far received little attention, are a source of dysregulated expression patterns of certain cytokines and are therefore immunologically active. The focus is on the cytokines IL-1ra, MCP-1/CCL2 and, in particular, RANTES/CCL5.

02

Overexpression of RANTES/CCL5

A number of autoimmune diseases — for example sarcoidosis, multiple sclerosis and Lyme borreliosis — are attributed to the overexpression of the pro-inflammatory chemokine RANTES/CCL5.

03

Limitations of radiographic diagnostics

Conventional radiographic techniques show these bone marrow defects only to a limited extent. ICOSIM therefore supports the development of more advanced ultrasound diagnostics.

04

Implants and root-canal-treated teeth in focus

Maxillo-mandibular Osteoimmunology also considers implants and endodontically treated teeth as possible triggers of systemic diseases.

Committee · Scientific Council

National and International Scientific Council

The Scientific Council committee may be established by the Board at national and international level. The Board may likewise appoint a head of department for the respective Scientific Council committee.

Duties, rights and access of the Scientific CouncilDetails

The Member of the Scientific Council collaborates on a specific scientific project. Specific projects to be addressed by a working group may be proposed to the Board by the active members and are decided upon by the Board and the Executive Council. The composition of the project group, the work content and the timing are submitted together with the proposal to the Board and the Executive Council.

Duties of a Member of the Scientific Council

  • Providing specialist advice to the Board, board members and the Executive Council.
  • Encouraging and supporting ICOSIM members in their endeavour to inform themselves about the knowledge of Integrative Oral Medicine.
  • Organising and conducting training sessions, lectures, practical exercises and IOM presentations, and conducting courses on Integrative Oral Medicine treatment procedures in accordance with the curriculum of the “Certified IOM Specialist” and the JAWBONE DETOX protocol and/or Lechner’s Slowimplant protocol.
  • Personal participation in training and continuing education measures.
  • Advising on the acquisition of specialist literature.

The Member of the Scientific Council has access to the regular ICOSIM portal and access to the leadership of the working groups and their findings.

The working groups formed pursue the aim of further deepening the understanding of Integrative (biological) Oral Medicine, providing it with a scientific foundation and spreading the idea of IOM. All work carried out by the working groups is therefore aimed at strengthening the substance of the concept of IOM.

The Member of the Scientific Council may apply to the association for both substantive and financial support for the activities and project work carried out in the working group or groups. The amount and scope of the support are decided by the Board as a committee.

At their request, the respective Member of the Scientific Council is listed on the association’s website as “Member of the Scientific Council” and linked to a website of their practice designated by them.

The Member of the Scientific Council has no voting rights. The right to attend general meetings and the minority right under Section 37 of the German Civil Code (BGB) remain unaffected.

Circle Member

Circle Member / Industry Partner / Institutions

Industry Partners, institutions or larger practice-clinic units can contribute to the development of ICOSIM as Circle Members. The Circle Member supports the management and resourcing of ICOSIM in the development and expansion of the association in various ways.

Support measures and presentation as a partnerDetails

Possible support measures

  • Expansion of and support for the work of the ICOSIM working groups.
  • Provision of infrastructure, materials and/or staff support.
